STORY

Born in Denmark, lust for adventure brought me to Africa. I’ve lived in Zambia, Tanzania and Uganda for 12 years.

Working mostly among marginalized populations, e.g. former child soldiers, prison inmates, psychiatric patients, etc., I experienced an ever-increasing interest in psychology. In effect, I supplemented my original education in anthropology with an education in psychology.

I’ve been married to Majbrit since 1999. Our three sons, being today young adults, have given us profound experience with different school systems. On my side, due to her career at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I have also from time to time gained experience in the role of trailing expat spouse and parent.

With our oldest son in his own apartment right next door, we are now all back in Copenhagen, Denmark.

PERSONAL LIFE

My son and I have just obtained hunting licenses. It was a pleasure to learn about nature, law and more with him. I felt so proud and happy to have been asked to join him in this activity.

On Friday, I usually attend a volunteer-run community sauna in one of Copenhagen’s more diverse neighborhoods. I remember my first experience of being dressed as biblical Adam among strangers as having an almost spiritual effect on me. I think that maybe, I caught a glimpse of an uplifting, shared humanity beneath the shiny shoes, ties and rags in which we had arrived.

Due to her work, my wife can’t always join me in the sauna on Friday. On Sunday, however, we always “church surf” together.

Years ago, we challenged each other to not miss a single service for the entire upcoming year and we have sticked to that commitment since. Initially, our idea was to try a new church every Sunday. Gratitude is one of the sentiments, I mostly get to experience more of by means of our church surfing, I think.
